The 2009 season got underway Saturday. King salmon fishing was non-existent this weekend for anyone and it's a bit early for halibut. We did find a large school of cod though (I made them start tossing them back after we put about 12 in the box). I'll add photos and stories to this thread as the season progresses.

You guys are very lucky. Here in the Golf of St.Lawrence, we have to wait until Fisheries and Oceans open the cod season for the pleasure boaters and we are only allowed 5 cods per persons with a maximum of 15 by boat and beleive me the size of the ones on the picture is far bigger from what we can catch here.

Happy fishing and boating season to all.

No bait just 3 - 6 oz. pencil jigs depending on current for bottom jigging with the downrigger rods or a 3 oz. bucktail on the light rod. Those downriggers are freakin' sweet ain't they?!

Thanks Jean! No season, no limit on cod here but most of us consider them trash fish... Why eat cod when you can eat halibut? There just happened to be a huge school of them around that day and nothing else going on.

Things are finally starting to pick up a little here but the fishing has been markedly slow all over the state. I burned a lot of fuel over the weekend to turn up just a few fish but we did boat one dandy king. No complaints on the weather either. It's been hot and dusty for going on a week now!

This is the 3rd year running that Arctos has been involved with the Wounded Warrior Project. I look forward to it every year but I'll be glad for the time when there isn't a need for that organization any more. We got off to a slow start but were able to pull out 6 kings and 5 coho in the last hour to make for an incredible memory.

and there's more here which I'll update as more shots come in:

Rob; You deserve much credit for being involved in the WW project... Great photos & thanx for sharing them... I echo your sentiments as to the necessity of this fabulous program coming to an end... Have a great " summer "; or is it " winter " up in the North Ctry?

Well, the '09 season is over. the boat is out of the water and I've shifted focus to hunting until January when she'll get splashed again for winter kings. The season was a pretty poor one. The bait never really showed up and we only had a few good spurts of fishing that was farther out than the last few years. The good note is that the boat ran like a champ. The only breakdown being a broken steering cable. I reconfigured the trailer a little (lowering the rollers up forward and bringing the stops forward as well. The boat loads smooth and easy without having to power it up and on anymore and seems to have a better balance on the axles. The new downriggers were amazing and a good time was had by nearly everyone, with the exception of a couple cases of seasickness... wink.gif

Here's some of the pics: (page one is this season)

biggrin.gif Season may have been pretty poor but the ones ya got in the pictures looked OUTSTANDING! Thanks for sharing. Now it's off to KROGER to catch some fish. For real though it looked like all were having a good time. As in all sports there's always next season. Good luck on the HUNT! wink.gif

No Kroger trips for me. I sent off 1000+ pounds of filleted salmon, lingcod and halibut with friends this year (half or less than normal) but for once I was smart enough to keep a little back for myself. When I say "poor year", it's the difference between boating 35 king salmon (nothing else is worth counting) or 100... I still can't complain.
